Chapter Nineteen

Look away, Levi. You have a job to do. He was supposed to circulate around the room, checking all of the trainees. But they all faded into the background when Anna was present. He only wanted to spend time with her.

Behind them, Ron cleared his throat. Levi jumped to his feet. “Keep practicing, Anna. You’ll get it.”

“I’m sure she will,” Ron said dryly. He dropped his voice so no one else could hear. “Especially with all the special attention she received from the instructor.”

“She needed extra help to get down to floor level.” The defensiveness in Levi’s voice highlighted his guilt.

“I know.” Ron pinned him with a pointed glare. “Once she got out of the wheelchair, though . . .”

“I tried to give her some adaptive techniques for sitting instead of kneeling.”

Ron held up a hand. “We’re wasting valuable time arguing when we should be paying attention to our trainees. I think it’d be best if you go back to the other side of the room.” He handed Levi the list. “Those are the ones who’ve passed so far.”

“Mine’s over there.” Levi pointed to his paper, which he’d left beside Anna’s mat.

“Figures.” Ron headed in Anna’s direction.

The last thing Levi needed was to get his coworker upset. He and Ron did many of these classes. They’d always worked well together and been good friends. For the rest of the session, Levi concentrated on checking and assisting each of the students who hadn’t yet passed and tried to keep his glances at Anna to a minimum.

Some students also did CPR on the children and baby mannequins. Anna remained on the floor for those. A quick peek at her working on the infant hit him hard. She had a baby at home, so he had no business pining for her.

That time, when he turned away, he didn’t look around again. Although he wished he could coach her, he didn’t even watch when it was time for her to return to the wheelchair. To make sure he didn’t peek, he kept his back to that side of the room as he collected the kneeling mats and mannequins.

By the time he’d stored them in the closet and gone to the podium, Anna sat at her place at the table. Ron was still gathering the remaining training items. Levi debated about helping him, but then one of the trainees got up to assist.

“Great job, everyone,” Levi said, struggling to keep his attention from lingering in one spot. “Once you take this multiple-choice test, we’ll grade it right away. Those who pass both parts will leave tonight with their CPR certification cards.”

He and Ron worked in tandem to grade the tests and hand out cards. The room slowly cleared. He let Ron check Emily’s and Anna’s answers, while the two of them headed to the kitchen.

Levi tapped his pen against the tabletop as he waited for the last stragglers to finish. Click. Click. Click.

Ron set a hand on Levi’s arm. “Can you stop that infernal noise?” He kept his voice low.
